About the Awards

StudyAdelaide's International Student Awards are endorsed by His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia.

The awards are an opportunity for the international community, academic institutions, local community and businesses to honour the achievements of international students during their time in Adelaide.  The award program, now in its seventh year, are highly regarded and a valuable addition to the winning students' resumes.

Following the application and assessment process, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia will present the awards to the winning students during a function at Government House. The awards are presented for outstanding achievement by international students in the following categories:

  • Academic Excellence
    • University undergraduate
    • University postgraduate - Research
    • University postgraduate - Coursework
    • Vocational Education and Training (VET)
    • School
    • Pathways
  • Sporting Achievement
  • Entrepreneurship/Innovation
  • Community Engagement
  • Arts and Culture

Categories

The awards for academic excellence is presented to one international student in each sub-category. There will also be a highly commended award in each sub-category.  Please address the following criteria in your application:

  • Academic record
  • Awards, prizes and achievements
  • Engagement with your institution and the Adelaide community
  • Evidence of overcoming challenges
  • Transition to Adelaide life
  • Future life and/or study goals, career aspirations

The subcategories are:

  • University undergraduate
  • University postgraduate – Research
  • University postgraduate – Course work
  • Vocational Education and Training (VET)
  • School
  • Pathways

This award is presented to one international student for their sporting achievement or sporting contribution whilst in South Australia.

There will also be a highly commended award.

To be eligible for the award, you must, in the last 12 months, have received recognition for your sporting achievements or provided a significant contribution to sport in South Australia. Please address the following criteria in your application:

  • Details of the sporting achievement/contribution
  • Any recognition that you have received for it
  • How the achievement or contribution provided additional life skills
  • Your capacity to be an effective ambassador for that sport.

* You must also include one paragraph on your ability to balance your sporting commitments with your studies. 

*You must include a minimum of one academic referee in your application.

This award is presented to one international student for their outstanding achievement in entrepreneurship/innovation.

There will also be a highly commended award.

To be eligible for the award, you must demonstrate your entrepreneurial/innovative skills or have been recognised for your work in the field of entrepreneurship and innovation. Please address the following criteria in your application:

  • Demonstrate your entrepreneurial/innovative experiences
  • Explain the planning and implementation process
  • Define the current stage of your entrepreneurial/innovative idea
  • How your entrepreneurial/innovative work has been viewed by the wider community
  • The impact the work has or will have on the community or its field
  • Future aspirations for this idea or others in the entrepreneurial space

*Applications must also include one paragraph on your ability to balance your entrepreneurial activities with your studies. 

*Applications must include a minimum of one academic referee in your application.

This award is presented to one international student for their involvement in volunteer work or community engagement in South Australia.

There will also be a highly commended award.

To be eligible for this award you must have volunteered your time and service to an organisation, education institution or community endeavour that has resulted in the advancement of that entity, its mission and/or cause.

Please address the following criteria in your application:

  • Volunteer experience(s) including a breakdown of key tasks
  • Length of volunteer experience(s)
  • The effect the volunteer experience had on the community and yourself
  • Any awards or recognitions received by the wider community

*Applications must also include one paragraph on your ability to balance your volunteer commitments with your studies. 

*Applications must include a minimum of one academic referee in their application.

The arts and culture award is presented to one international student for their artistic and cultural achievement or contribution to arts and culture whilst in South Australia.

There will also be a highly commended award.

To be eligible for this award, you must demonstrate your artistic or cultural achievements or contribution to the arts and cultural community in performance, music or visual arts.  Please address the following criteria in your application:

  • Range of artistic or cultural experience
  • Any recognised achievements
  • How your artistic or cultural contribution has been viewed by the wider community
  • Your capacity to be an effective ambassador for arts and culture
  • Originality or creativity

*Applications must also include one paragraph on your ability to balance your arts and cultural commitments with your studies. 

*Applications must include a minimum of one academic referee in your application.

This award is presented to an international student association for an event they have organised in the last 12 months in Adelaide/South Australia.  The event must have engaged and supported international students during their studies here in Adelaide.  Please address the following criteria in your application:

  • How the event enhanced the student experience
  • How it engaged newly arrived international students
  • The team structure and roles for planning the event
  • The outcomes of the event eg: attendance numbers, feedback received
  • Provide a summary of the annual event calendar for the association
  • Summarise how the event was funded
  • How the local community, businesses and other associations were engaged in this event

Awarded to the most outstanding student from across all category winners as selected by the judging panel.

Key Dates

Opening Date:3 July 2017
Closing Date: 5:00pm, 1 September 2017

Award Presentation: Winners will be announced by His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia at a function for international students on Friday October 20, 2017 at Government House.

Nominee Requirements

  1. Nominees must be;
    1. current international students, enrolled in a South Australian education institution.
    2. currently studying or have completed a course within the last six months.
  2. Nominations for individual awards must be written by the student applying for the award. 
  3. Nominations for Student Event of the Year must be submitted by the student association leadership team
  4. Previous winners may apply, but must submit a new application.
  5. All nomination information, photos and supporting material submitted may be used and distributed by StudyAdelaide for media and promotional purposes. 
  6. Nominees agree to participate in media publicity and promotion associated with the awards, including the use of photos submitted, or taken at the awards presentation ceremony.
  7. Finalists should be available and endeavour to attend the Governor's Farewell and International Student Awards on Friday 20 October 2017 (inability to attend does not disqualify entry).

Application Process

  1. Applications must be;
    1. submitted via online application software.
    2. no longer than 1000 words (see application form)
  2. All criteria should be addressed in your online nomination.  Relevant supporting documents and photographs should be attached to your nomination.  You can attach these as the last step of your online application.
  3. Applications open on Monday 3 July, 2017 and close 5:00pm Australian Central Standard Time (ACST) on Friday 1 September, 2017.
  4. Students can withdraw their application at any time up to 5:00pm Friday 1 September, 2017 by emailing sarahparrington@studyadelaide.com.
  5. The award winners will be announced by His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia at a function for international students on Friday 20 October, 2017 at Government House.

Prizes

  1. Each category winner will receive an award certificate signed by His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia and a travel voucher for a 2 day holiday to Kangaroo Island for two people valued at over $800.
  2. Highly Commended entries will receive a $200 gift voucher.
  3. Student Association Event of the Year receives a $750 cash prize to be spent on a future student event.
  4. The recipient of the International Student of the Year will win a return flight to his/her country of origin. The winner will need to notify StudyAdelaide of their preferred travel dates and book their travel prior to June 30 2018.

Selection Process

  1. The selection of winners is undertaken by a specialist judging panel convened by StudyAdelaide.
  2. The judges reserve the right to verify the content provided in any of the applications received.
  3. Members of the judging panel will maintain the confidentiality of the content of each application, unless consent is given by the nominee to do otherwise.
  4. StudyAdelaide reserves the right to not award the full complement of awards in any one year, if it is determined that the criteria have not been fully met.
  5. The judges' decisions are final and no further correspondence will be entered.
