The 2018 South Australian Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards recognise and acknowledge the significant contribution that nurses and midwives in any specialty area or healthcare environment make to their professions and the community through their practice.

The awards are open to all nurses and midwives who are registered to practice with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, are employed within South Australia at the time of nomination and work within the health system.

Suitable nominees are those that go over and above the everyday demands of the role and exhibit exceptional qualities that can be demonstrated through the nomination process.

How to Nominate
  1. Select the relevant excellence award category for your nominee from those listed.

    • Word.doc templates of each category can be downloaded (these are working documents only and not the official form) so that you can commence the process and then enter these details onto the portal containing the on-line nomination form. Anything with an asterisk on the form is mandatory)

  2. Complete all fields on the online nomination form. Anything with a red asterisks denotes a mandatory field.
  3. Address the specified criteria listed under each award category in no more than 250 words per criterion.
  4. Obtain agreement from the nominee or team to the nomination.
  5. The nomination must be supported by two (2) referees. The reference templates can be downloaded for each referee to complete and then uploaded by the nominator to complete the nomination process.
  6. Endorsement from the Chief Executive Officer, or Executive Director of Nursing/Midwifery, or Director of Nursing/Midwifery or relevant line manager (whichever applicable) - OR not applicable if nominee is a private practitioner

 Mary Buckskin Excellence in Practice - Aboriginal Nurse/ Midwife
Category Description

This award recognises nominations of Aboriginal Nurses/Midwives working in any specialty area or healthcare environment, e.g. public, private, primary healthcare, rural & remote, residential aged care and the tertiary sector.

This Award recognises outstanding performance of an Aboriginal Nurse/Midwife. The Aboriginal nurse/midwife provides care that is contemporary, culturally sensitive and outcome based for the specific needs of the individual or the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Community(ies). The Aboriginal nurse/midwife demonstrates a commitment to safe high quality care which is evidence based and person centred.

*Note: Nominees must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.


 Excellence in Practice - Registered Nurse
Category Description

This award recognises nominations of Registered Nurses working in any specialty area or healthcare environment, e.g. public, private, primary healthcare, rural & remote, residential aged care and the tertiary sector.

This Award recognises outstanding performance of a Registered Nurse who provides an excellent standard of practice and professionalism and is committed to providing safe high quality care which is evidenced based and person centred. The Registered Nurse provides leadership, advocacy, is an excellent role model and contributes to the standards of nursing practice by promoting continuous improvement and positive patient/client outcome.


 Excellence in Practice - Registered Midwife
Category Description

This award recognises nominations of Registered Midwives working in any specialty area or healthcare environment, healthcare environment, e.g. public, private, primary healthcare, rural & remote and the tertiary sector.

This Award recognises the outstanding performance of a Registered Midwife who demonstrates an excellent standard of practice and professionalism, supports woman centred evidence based care which positively impacts on the health outcomes of the woman, baby and family. The Registered Midwife provides leadership, advocacy, is an excellent role model and demonstrates a commitment to collaborative practice.


 Excellence in Practice - Enrolled Nurse
Category Description

This award recognises nominations of Enrolled Nurses working in any specialty area or healthcare environment, e.g. public, private, primary healthcare, rural & remote, residential aged care sector.

This Award recognises outstanding performance of an Enrolled Nurse who demonstrates an excellent standard of practice and professionalism and is committed to providing safe high quality care which is evidenced based and person centred. The Enrolled Nurse is an excellent role model for all nurses and midwives, works collaboratively to advocate for and facilitate the involvement of individuals, families and significant others in planning and evaluating care and progress toward positive health outcomes.


 Excellence in Innovation in Education (Registered Nurse/Registered Midwife)
Category Description

This award recognises nominations of Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives working in any specialty area or healthcare environment, e.g. public, private, primary healthcare, rural & remote, residential aged care and the tertiary sector.

This Award recognises a Registered Nurse /Midwife who has made an outstanding contribution to innovation in education. The Registered Nurse /Midwife has demonstrated leadership and/or participated in scholarly and/or educative activities which contributes to a learning culture and is an excellent role model to nurses and midwives. The Registered Nurse/Midwife in this category has influenced practice change, critical thinking and self-reflection through education resulting in positive outcomes for patient/client care.


 Excellence in Innovation in Clinical Research (Registered Nurse/Registered Midwife)
Category Description

This award recognises nominations of Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives working in any specialty area or healthcare environment, e.g. public, private, primary healthcare, rural & remote, residential aged care and the tertiary sector.

N.B This is an individual award category, team nominations will not be accepted.

This Award recognises a Registered Nurse/Midwife who has made an outstanding contribution to innovation in clinical research. The Registered Nurse/Midwife has demonstrated leadership and commitment to improving the quality of health care through nursing/ midwifery clinical research and a commitment to fostering and supporting clinical research for the professions of nursing and/or midwifery. The Registered Nurse or Midwife in this category has influenced practice change and/or policy reform through research resulting in positive outcomes for patient/client care and is an excellent role model.


 Excellence in Leadership (Registered Nurse/Registered Midwife)
Category Description

This award recognises nominations of Registered Nurses and Registered Midwives working in any specialty area or healthcare environment, e.g. public, private, primary healthcare, rural & remote, residential aged care and the tertiary sector.

This Award recognises a Registered Nurse/ Midwife who has displayed leadership across health, the professions, and/or the community and contributes to the shaping and development of health care reform and policy to improve the health and welfare outcomes of the South Australian community. The Registered Nurse/ Midwife in this category is an excellent role model for nurses and midwives, they display leadership which significantly contributes to excellence in nursing and/or midwifery practice, they are highly regarded and are seen as a future leader in their field.


 Excellence in Person Centred Care - Team Award (Registered Nurse/Registered Midwife/Enrolled Nurse)
Category Description

This award recognises nominations from teams of nurses and midwives working in any specialty area or healthcare environment, e.g. public, private, primary healthcare, rural & remote, residential aged care and the tertiary sector that demonstrate:

This Award acknowledges nursing or midwifery led teams who provide a service that benefits the patient/ client or community. The Team works collaboratively with patients/clients, families, carers and/ or other health clinicians to provide evidenced based person centred care which contributes to improving the health care outcomes of patients/clients and of the community.

*Note: The nominated team must contain two or more nurses and/or midwives. The Award will only be presented to the team members who are nurses and/or midwives.

Terms and Conditions

Please read the following terms and conditions carefully as nominators who do not follow the instructions may not have their nomination considered.

  • Nominees must currently be working in South Australia either working either full-time or part-time as a nurse or midwife.
  • Nominees must not be subject to any notification, restriction/limitation to practice, under investigation, disciplinary process or undergoing performance management. If a nominee is found by the Nursing and Midwifery Office to be subject to any of these conditions at any time during the Awards process, they will be automatically disqualified from the Awards process.
  • Nominees must hold a current practising certificate with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and have no conditions/undertakings, limitations or notations on registration.
  • Nominees - in the event that a nominee is nominated in more than one (1) category by several nominators, the nominee will be contacted and asked which category they wish to be considered for.
  • Completed nominations are to be received no later than 11:59pm on Friday 15 December 2017.  Nominations will not be accepted after this deadline.
  • Nominators must inform nominees that they have been nominated.
  • All nominators must acknowledge the nomination Terms & Conditions.
  • All nomination forms must include the contact details of the Chief Executive Officer, Executive Director of Nursing/Midwifery or Director of Nursing/Midwifery. Nominations will be subject to their approval, excluding nominees that are self-employed.
  • Nominators must gain the consent of the nominee's employer before making a nomination and confirm this on the nomination form. Any nomination form that does not indicate consent will be disregarded unless the nominee is self-employed.
  • A confirmation email will be sent to the Nominator following successful completion of the application process by the secretariat of the Event Coordinator.   • All nominees will be notified of their nomination and receive a certificate which can be downloaded from the website.
  • Finalists will be announced on the website on Wednesday 28 February, 2018 and receive formal correspondence from the Nursing & Midwifery Office.
  • The winners of the Award categories will be announced at the SA Nursing & Midwifery Excellence Awards Gala Dinner on Friday 11 May 2018.
  • Finalists may be required to speak with the media and/or other organisations about their award.

References

  • The names of two other referees/supporters/seconders must be supplied with a written reference to be uploaded for the nomination to be considered. Please note the Nominator cannot be a referee.
  • The reference templates use a Likert scale so that the referee can score the nominee against category criteria and provide a supporting reference against the criteria of up to 500 words. The templates for each category can be downloaded from the portal.

Selection Process

  • To nominate a nurse, a midwife or a team for a SA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Award in 2018 it is important to select the most relevant Award category listed above.
  • Each award category requires nominators to address one (1) generic and three (3) specific criteria questions in no more than 250 words per criteria. The criteria in each award category are specific to the selected scope of practice.
  • All category criteria carry the same excellence weighting.
  • There will be only one winner chosen for each award category. Review panel members reserve the right not to award a category on occasion.
  • The selection of the finalists and award winners for the 2018 SA Nursing and Midwifery Awards will be made by a panel of experienced nurses and midwives from a variety of health services, organisations and settings who will rank all nominations.
  • The awards selection process is confidential and final and it is not a requirement of the panel or chair to provide feedback to the nominees or nominators.
  • All nominations submitted become the sole property of the Nursing and Midwifery Office and will not be returned, including any photos or any resources sent.

Prizes

  • Finalists will be invited to attend the Gala Dinner on Friday, May 11, 2018, at the South Australian Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards Gala Dinner to be held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
  • Prizes for Finalists include:
    • a complimentary ticket to attend the gala dinner, and
    • a parchment acknowledging recognition of their achievement.
  • The winner of each category will be chosen from the finalists and announced at the  SA Nursing & Midwifery Excellence Awards Gala Dinner, as detailed above,  and will receive:
    • a trophy
    • $1000 in recognition of their achievement.
  • The Excellence in Person Centred Care – Team Award winners will also receive
    • a trophy
    • $1000 towards further education or team development
  • All prizes will be awarded on the condition the finalists and winner agree to accept their prize in person by attending the Gala Dinner.
  • The prizes are not transferrable or exchangeable and cannot be taken as cash
  • Only one award will be presented for each category.

  • SA Health reserves the right to use any media/photos/articles for future promotional purposes or publications, unless otherwise advised.

  • These awards are designed to recognise excellence, how you answer the questions will largely determine whether the nominee/ teams are selected as a finalist for a prestigious award, so please take your time to give a good account of why you think this nurse or midwife deserves an excellence award.

What information do I need to provide – how much detail?

Answer

Yes, you can commence the process, save it and come back at a later date to complete it. Nominators will need to create an account before submitting a nomination. There will be a log-in option on the portal that will allow the nominator access to their in-complete nomination.

Are references a mandatory part of the nomination process?

Answer

Yes. The nomination will need to be supported by two (2) referees, each referee will need to complete the reference template. You (the nominator) will need to upload the reference for each referee to the portal to complete the nomination process. Please note, the nominator cannot be a referee.

Reference Templates

This year the reference templates have been revised and a Likert scale has been introduced so that the referee can score the nominee against the category criteria and provide a supporting reference of up to 500 words.  The templates for each category can be downloaded from the portal.
